General Information
Before consuming cannabis, it’s important to understand its effects and potential health risks. Generally speaking, cannabis is known to impair your memory, concentration, coordination, and learning and problem solving abilities. This is true for everyone, but it’s especially harmful for adolescents and young children and their developing brains.
DCR recommends that parents prepare themselves for the possibility that their children will try cannabis and proactively speak with them about the dangers of early cannabis use. For tips on speaking with children of all ages, click here.

Legal, Local Cannabis
The City of Los Angeles is home to the largest number of legal cannabis businesses in California. Yet, the illicit market still exists and its presence poses health and safety risks to the community at large as well hampers the stability and growth of the legal market. A public information campaign to show the benefits of and to encourage consumers to shop at legal, local cannabis was launched by DCR in July 2024. The campaign included billboard advertisements, social media and public outreach at community events with information on how to find legal, local cannabis and to highlight that legal cannabis products are tested for harmful chemicals, pesticides and mold.
