June 19 - The Department of Cannabis Regulation celebrates Juneteenth, the commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. This, however, was two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect in January, 1863. This day, the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, has become a day for African Americans to celebrate not only their freedom, but their history, culture and achievements. The Emancipation Proclamation set all slaves free on January 1, 1863. June 19th, is now commemorated by the federal holiday known as Juneteenth.
To celebrate Juneteenth, we remain committed to providing the Social Equity community with the tools, education, seed money, and resources to build a better future through entrepreneurship and workforce development. We cannot right the wrongs of the past, but we can build a more equitable future.
The DCR Social Equity Program celebrates June Pride Month and recognizes the dignity, contributions and continued struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community.
